The Red Storm fall to 5-9 on the season and 0-4 in the BIG EAST, while the Hurricanes improve to 9-5 and 2-2 in the league.
In the first half there were five lead changes and five ties as the two teams appeared very evenly matched. Trailing 23-19 at the 4:25 mark, junior Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J.) and senior Latasha Thompson (Newark, N.J.) nailed consecutive three-pointers to tie the score at 25-25 with just over three minutes left in the half. But from there the Hurricanes outscored St. John's 6-1 and led by five (31-26) at the break.
In the second half the Red Storm struggled offensively and couldn't seem to gain any momentum. On one occaision they closed the gap to five on a layup by junior Telisha Warner (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) at the 10:19 mark, but the Hurricanes then reeled off six straight points to push the deficit back to 11. From there the Red Storm would get no closer than eight.
Senior Katrina Johns (Baltimore, Md.) notched her third "double double" of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Brown reached double figures for the 14th consecutive game with 11. Warner, who had not started a game since December 28 against Rhode Island, earned the start in this one and tallied 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The Red Storm return to action on Wednesday, January 17 when they travel to Norfolk, Va., to face Hampton University in a non-conference game at 7:00.
