The Red Storm fall to 5-7, 0-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Mountaineers improve to 4-9, 2-1.
Trailing 8-6 early on, WVU went on a 12-0 run to assume an 18-8 lead with 11:40 to play in the first half. The Red Storm battled back and eventually cut the lead back to three after a three-pointer by freshman Nora Gyuris (Pecs, Hungary). WVU pulled away again and led by 11 at the half.
West Virginia maintained a double-digit advantage for the rest of the game, helped by their strong three-point shooting. The Mountaineers, ranked second in the league in three-point shooting percentage (.424), hit 11 of 18 long range shots (.611), while the Red Storm hit just 12 of 37 (.324).
Katrina Johns (Baltimore, Md.) notched her second "double double" of the season, with a career-high 16 rebounds to go along with 10 points. Junior Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J.) extended her double-figure scoring streak to 12 games with a team-high 15 points to go along with four assists. Junior Giani Bowles (Detroit, Mich.) came off the bench to play a season-high 21 minutes and contributed 14 points, including four three-pointers, and freshman Sherri Brown (Willingboro, N.J.) chipped in 10 points.
St. John's center Tynisha Myles (Paterson, N.J.) missed her first game of the season after suffering an ankle sprain against Boston College on Tuesday.
The Red Storm return home on Tuesday, January 9 when they host Notre Dame, ranked #3 in the country, in a BIG EAST matchup at 7:30 in Alumni Hall.
