Statler is a point guard who leads her team in scoring, averaging over 20 points per game. As a junior, she averaged 18.0 points, 5.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per contest. An all-state second team selection at Oak Glen high school, Statler was also named to the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference second team, the East Liverpool Review first team and the all-valley second team. Mary Pat has stepped up as a senior and has led her team to a 13-2 record, says Estep. She will bring to us some needed scoring and aggressive defense. Statler, who is also an outstanding student, is ranked 71st in the nation as a high school point guard by the All-Star Girls Report Recruiting Guide.
Kurtosi and Szavuly are teammates at Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas and have been instrumental in the success of their program. Kurtosi, 6-4, is the squads leading rebounder, averaging 6.9 per game, and has blocked a team-high 20 shots. Shooting 58.3 per cent from the floor, Kurtosi is the second-leading scorer at Colby averaging 10.5 points per game. A native of Miskolc, Hungary, she is ranked 55th in the nation as a JUCO player. Also from Miskolic, Hungary, Szavuly is a point guard who paces her team with a 14.1 scoring average. Ranked 22nd in the nation as a JUCO player, she also averages 2.8 steals and 3.8 assists. Szavuly is a strong outside shooter, making 44.4 per cent of her shots from three-point range.
Reka and Katalin are playing on the same team which will help them adjust well to a new institution and to adapt to the system, says Estep. Reka will come in and will be able to score at the point. Her knowledge of the game is very good. She is leading her team in many different categories but the strongest is leadership. And Katalin will add some much needed height at 6-4.
Reka and Katalin have been very instrumental in turning our program around, says Colby head coach Tom Stephens. They have made an immediate impact on our team and in the tough Jayhawk conference they are proving to be big time players.
St. Johns is 6-13 overall and 1-7 in the BIG EAST conference, and return home to host Seton Hall on Saturday, February 3 at 2:00.
