The win snapped a three-game losing skid for St. Johns and boosts their record to 7-15 overall and 2-9 in the BIG EAST. The Mountaineers dropped their ninth straight and fall to 4-18 and 2-9.
St. Johns took control early, jumping out to a 16-3 lead midway through the first half. In fact the Mountaineers connected on just one field goal over that span, until Kate Bulger hit a short jumper at the 8:16 mark to end the drought. Her bucket ignited an 11-0 run for the Mountaineers, who cut the lead to 16-14 with 3:47 remaining. The Red Strom came back to life and outscored WVU 9-3 in the remaining minutes and took a 25-17 lead into the lockerroom.
The second half belonged to the Red Storm, who bolted to a 45-22 lead in the first nine minutes and never looked back. St. Johns held the Mountaineers to their lowest output of the season (41 points) while capitalizing on a fine shooting performance, as they hit 25 of 58 field goals for a 43.1 percentage.
Brown led all scorers with 17 points, while junior Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J.) tallied 15 points and six assists. R. Brown has now scored in double figures in 22 straight games, the fourth-longest such streak in St. Johns history. Senior Latasha Thompson (Newark, N.J.) hit for 16 points and classmate Tynisha Myles (Paterson, N.J.) chipped in 10 points. Senior Katrina Johns (Baltimore, Md.) was held scoreless from the floor but pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Bulger led the Mountaineers with 11 points in the losing effort.
The Red Storm are now back in contention for a spot in the BIG EAST tournament, which includes only the top 12 teams in the 14-team conference. St. Johns is currently tied with West Virginia, Providence and Boston College, all with two conference wins.
St. Johns returns to action on Wednesday, February 14 when it travels to Miami, Fla. for a rematch with the Miami Hurricanes. Game time is set for 7:00. The Red Storm will be looking to avenge a 67-51 loss to the Hurricanes from earlier in the season.
