The Red Storm are now 7-16 and 2-10 in the BIG EAST, while the Hurricanes improve to 12-11 and 5-7 in the league.
St. John's traveled to Miami without the services of junior Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J.) who was suspended for one game for violating team rules. Brown leads the team in scoring and assists, and will rejoin the squad this weekend when the Red Storm travel to Georgetown.
The Red Storm were plagued by 27 turnovers and Miami capitalized on them, scoring 29 points off Red Storm miscues. The Hurricanes shot 51.7 per cent from the floor for the game as all 11 players to get in the game contributed to the scoring.
Miami got off to a fast start, bolting to a 14-5 lead in the opening minutes. But the Red Storm came roaring back and made it a one possession game at 15-13 on a fast break layup by freshman Sherri Brown (Willingboro, N.J.). The Red Storm could not take over the lead, though, and the Hurricanes made a run again, and led 31-19 at the break.
In the second half, three Red Storm players got into foul trouble early. The Hurricanes were able to convert many of the three-point play opportunities, and tallied 38 points in the paint.
Senior Tynisha Myles (Paterson, N.J.) led the Red Storm with nine points and eight rebounds, while seniors Eukeisha Iton (Miami, Fla.), senior Katrina Johns and Brown all finished with six points apiece.
St. John's returns to action on Saturday, February 17 when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on the Georgetown Hoyas at 3:00.
