In the season opener, the Red Storm was held to just two hits in seven innings, both coming from junior Kelly Houghton (Millsboro, DE/Briarcliffe). Gina Calabrese (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) suffered the loss.
Entering the bottom of the sixth with no score, Eastern Kentucky mounted a rally. Lisa Edwards led off with a double, advanced to third on a bunt single by Kelli Bromley and scored on a single by Diana Barreras. But the rally was held to just one run as Calabrese got Amy Herrington to line into a double play to Alesha Argeras at second base who forced out Barreras at second.
St. Johns responded with a slight offensive spark in their half of the inning as Houghton drilled a two-out single to left for her second hit of the game. Marilyn Brown (Bronx, NY/John F. Kennedy) then battled back behind 0-2 to foul out to first on a full count to end the game.
The Red Storm jumped to an early 1-0 lead in game two against East Carolina. Lisa Tropea led off the game with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Sheppherd and scored on a single by Tiffany Howerton. However, the Pirates answered back with three runs of their own, all unearned, in the top of the second off two errors by shortstop, Shepherd.
St. Johns had just three baserunners in the next three innings before a short seventh inning rally. With one out, Jeannine Giammarino drew a walk. Cecilia Baston pinch-ran and advanced to second on a single by Amy Crook. Lauren Fisher, representing the tying run, hit into a fielders choice, with Baston out at third. Lisa Tropea struck out swinging to end the game.
Sophomore Courtney Fitzgerald got the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits in seven innings.
St. Johns will continue tournament play as they face George Mason tomorrow at noon.
