RED STORM WOMEN FALL TO GEORGETOWN, 72-53
2/17/2001 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The Red Storm fall to 7-17 and 2-11 in the BIG EAST, while the Hoyas improve to 15-10 over all and 6-7 in the league.
Georgetown scored the first 12 points of the game over the first seven and a half minutes, but the Red Storm responded with a run of their own, cutting the lead to 12-9 on a 9-0 spurt. St. John's kept it a two-possession game for most of the first half. However, holding a 24-20 lead, the Hoyas closed the first half with a 10-4 run and took a 34-24 lead into the lockerroom.
Rebekkah Brunson led a strong seocnd half surge by the Hoyas, who maintained a double-figure advantage for the rest of the game. Brunson finished with 15 points, 13 of which came in the second half.
Thompson led the Red Storm with 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting. She also dished out two assists and picked off a pair of steals. Freshman Sherri Brown (Willingboro, N.J.) was the only other Red Storm player to tally double figures with 13 points, including three three-pointers. Junior Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J.), the team's leading scorer, returned to the lineup after a one-game suspension but was held in check with only five points, all from the free throw line. Brown, who was 0-13 from the field, failed to score in double figures for the first time this season, snapping a streak of 22 straight games, the fourth-longest such run in St. John's women's basketball history.
The Red Storm came into today's game tied with West Virginia University for 13th place in the BIG EAST Conference, each with two conference wins. The Mountaineers defeated the Providence College Friars 79-74 earlier today, which gives them a third BIG EAST victory and puts them in a four-way tie for 10th place with the Friars, the Pittsburgh Panthers and the Boston College Eagles (Note: Pittsburgh plays Miami later this evening and BC will play Virginia Tech tomorrow). The Red Storm would need at least one more conference win to advance to the BIG EAST tournament, which takes only the top 12 teams in the conference.
The Red Storm's next chance to pick up that much-needed victory comes on Tuesday, February 20 when St. John's hosts Syracuse at 7:30 in Alumni Hall. The Red Storm will be looking to avenge a 66-54 loss at the hands of the Orangewomen from earlier in the season.
