The Buccanneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Brad Jones hit a leadoff homerun off of SJU sophomore starter Tom Klemm (Salem, N.H./Salem). With one out, Chris Kellett and Pat Siemers hit back-to-back singles and Andrew Grosse reached base on an error. After retiring the next batter, Klemm hit Cory Evans, scoring Siemers.
In the fifth inning, Kyle Leon hit a leadoff double, stole second and scored on a single through the left side by Adam Vanderburg, increasing the lead to 3-0. Brad Jones followed with a single off of sophomore Greg Holmes (Stony Brook, N.Y./Stony Brook), who relieved Klemm, and runners were on second and third when David Martindale singled and moved to third on an error, allowing both runners to score and giving CSU a 5-0 lead. Kellett followed with a single to score Martindale.
The Red Storm, meanwhile, were held in check by CSU starter Matt Coenen, who allowed no runs on four hits over 5.2 innings and struck out nine batters.
St. John's had only two runners in scoring position the entire game. Sophomore second baseman Chad Cambra (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) went 2-for-4 for the Red Storm, hitting a single and a double.
Klemm threw four innings, yielding four earned runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out four batters.
The Red Storm play at The Citadel on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
