With the victory, the Red Storm are now 8-17 and 3-11 in the BIG EAST, while Syracuse slips to 11-13 and 5-9 in the league. The win also puts the Red Storm back in contention for a spot in the BIG EAST tournament, which takes the top 12 teams in the 14-team conference. The Red Storm are now tied with West Virginia, Providence and Pittsburgh, all with three BIG EAST wins. Providence travels to Virginia Tech tomorrow evening, while West Virginia lost to Connecticut earlier tonight. Pittsburgh is idle until they travel to Boston College on Saturday, February 24.
After shooting just 22.2 percent in the first half, the Red Storm rallied from a 25-23 deficit and from down 10 in the second half to clinch the victory. It marked the first time all season that St. John's earned a victory after trialing at halftime.
Thompson rallied the troops in the second half, pouring in 13 of her team-high 17 points in the second half. Junior Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J.) tallied 15 points while freshman Sherri Brown (Willingboro, N.J.) added 12.
After spotting the Orangewomen the first six points of the second half, the Red Storm made a run and eventually tied the score at 35-35 on a pair of free throws by Thompson. S. Brown gave the Red Storm their first lead since the 6:05 mark of the first half on a short jumper. The Orangewomen kept it a one-possession game for the next several minutes until the Red Storm opened up a six-point lead with 6:08 to play on a pair of fast-break layups by Thompson and an off-balance jumper by senior Eukeisha Iton (Miami, Fla.). Syracuse would cut the lead to four on two occasions, but the Red Storm closed out the game with solid free throw shooting.
Syracuse's Paula Moore led all scorers with 22 points in the losing effort.
The Red Storm return to action on Friday, February 23 when they travel to Storrs, Conn., to face the No. 3 Connecticut Huskies at 7:30. St. John's closes out the regular season on Tuesday, February 27 against Virginia Tech at 7:30 in Alumni Hall.
