In game one of the doubleheader, Gina Calabrese pitched just 5.1 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits, and striking out just one.
Campbell jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. But the Red Storm answered right back. Kelly Houghton walked and advanced to second when Ann Raab was hit by a pitch. Lauren Fisher then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners before Houghton scored on a suicide squeeze by Michelle Crokus.
Campbell took the lead for good with a five-run fourth inning, putting the game out of reach for the Red Storm. With one out and five runs in, Courtney Fitzgerald came in to pitch for Calabrese (1-3). Fitzgerald walked the first batter she faced, but got the next two outs on a pop-up to first and a groundout to third. She pitched 2.2 innings giving up just one hit.
St. Johns scored just one more in the top of the fifth as Tiffany Howerton scored on an RBI single by Ann Raab.
In the nightcap, the Fighting Camels scored two runs in the first and three more in the third to seal the sweep. Long Island native Kathy Freaney held the Red Storm scoreless for five innings before giving up two runs in the top of the sixth.
Lisa Tropea led off the top of the sixth with a single down the left field line and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Jessica Shepherd struck out on what was called a bunt on a third strike, Tropea advanced to third on another wild pitch. Howerton then doubled in Tropea for the Red Storms first run of the game. The final run of the game came in when Tropea tagged up and reached third as Houghton flied out to right field in foul territory and scored as the right fielders throw went past the third baseman.
Fitzgerald went the distance, allowing five runs on nine hits and striking out two. Her record dropped to 1-2 on the season.
The Red Storm will then travel to Wilmington, NC to face UNC-Wilmington in a doubleheader tomorrow. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
