2/7/2001 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The Red Storm fall to 6-15 overall and 1-9 in the BIG EAST, while the Friars, who won their first home conference game of the season, improve to 8-12, 2-8.
The two teams traded baskets in the early going, but trailing 10-9, the Friars went on an 11-2 run to assume an eight point lead (20-12) at the 11:09 mark. Later in the half the Red Storm were able to cut that lead to five after a steal by junior Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J.) who got the ball to senior Tynisha Myles (Paterson, N.J.) for an easy layup. That made it 29-24, but the Friars scored the last three points of the half to take a 32-24 edge into the lockerroom.
The Friars ran away with it in the second half, maintaining a double-figure lead for the majority of the half. Though the two squads shot nearly identical percentages from the floor for the game, the Friars connected on 26-of-38 free throw attempts, compared to just 6-of-9 for St. John's.
Brown led the Red Storm with 18 points on 7-of-17 shooting, marking the 21st consecutive game in which she has netted double figures. Senior Latasha Thompson (Newark, N.J.) contributed 13 points, 10 of which came in the second half, and senior Katrina Johns (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in 10. Providence was led by Monika Roberts and Kristin Quinn, each with a game-high 19 points.
The Red Storm return home to Alumni Hall on Saturday, February 10 for a 2:00 matchup with West Virginia. The Red Storm will be looking to avenge an 81-63 loss to the Mountaineers from earlier in the season.
