In the first game, SJUs record improved to 9-10 when Tiffany Howerton (Escondido, CA/Escondido HS) went 2-for-2 in a victory over College of Charleston. In the bottom of the first inning Lisa Tropea (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside HS) was it by a pitch putting her on base for the Red Storm. Jessica Shepherd (Akron, OH/Ellet HS) popped up to short stop, but not before Howerton singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw home in attempt to throw out Tropea. Howerton recorded the RBI when the throw was off and Tropea reached safely.
Courtney Fitzgerald (Bellerose, NY/Mary Louis Academy) recorded her second shutout of the season for St. Johns giving up only two hits and striking out seven.
In the Red Storms second game of the day they faced the host Panthers. In the bottom of the second inning, Danielle Sweeney (Bellerose, NY/Mary Louis Academy) pinch hit for Amy Crook (Belleville, IL/Belleville East). Sweeney reached on an error by the short stop and knocked in the first run of the game when Ann Raab (Freehold, NJ/Allentown HS) scored. The Red Storm held on to the slim lead until the top of the fourth inning when GSU rallied for five runs.
SJU came back to within one when Lauren Fisher (East Rockaway, NY/East Rockaway HS) led off in the bottom of the sixth with a single to right field and Raab reached after being hit by a pitch. Kelly Houghton (Millsboro, Del./Briarcliffe) cleared the bases with a 3-run homerun over the center field fence. This brought the score to 5-4.
Gina Calabrese (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach HS) recorded the loss for SJU, bringing the Red Storm's overall record to 9-11.
St. John's will continue day two of the tournament Saturday when they face Wichita State University at 10:00 a.m.
