The Red Storm staked Klemm to a 3-0 lead in the first when junior centerfielder Charlie Bilezikjian (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) hit a two-out single, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on another error. Connecticut starter Jeff Fulchino then loaded the bases and issued consecutive walks to junior third baseman Jason Kane (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) and junior Bryan Hedgecock (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), extending the margin to 3-0.
In the second inning, freshman shortstop Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, N.J./Moorestown) and Bilezikjian hit back-to-back singles, moved up a base on a wild pitch and scored when senior first baseman Chris Fallon (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) singled to center. Sophomore second baseman Chad Cambra (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) followed with a double to right center, scoring Fallon, and giving St. Johns a 6-0 lead.
The Huskies cut the margin in half in the third on a bases clearing double by Ryan Treat, but Klemm was in control, going seven innings and allowing four runs on only four hits.
The Red Storm added what proved to be the winning run in the fourth when Rozema singled, stole second and scored when Cambra was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Rozema and Bilezikjian each had two hits and scored two runs for the Red Storm, while Fallon and Cambra drove in two runs apiece.
Klemm improved to 2-1 with the win, while junior Greg Holmes (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) threw 1.2 innings and picked up his third save of the season.
St. Johns returns to action on Wednesday, March 21, hosting Columbia at 3:30 p.m. at The Ballpark at St. Johns University.
