St. Johns Dominates Fencing Championships

St. Johns edged Pennsylvania, 87-80, in the 13-team mens field, and had a 98-81 cushion over runner-up Columbia in the 14-school womens event. In the combined team standings, St. Johns outpointed the runner-up Lions, 185-157.
Following the team competitions, two St. Johns fencers, sophomore Arlene Stevens (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and classmate Ivan Lee (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) captured individual honors. Stevens took the gold medal is the womens epee, while Lee won the mens sabre.
Other top finishers on the mens side included senior Alex Roytblat (Ashdod, Israel/Ort Oleysky) and junior Doron Levit (Givataiem, Israel/Kalai), who finished in second and third place, respectively, in the epee. Junior Jon Tiomkin (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hewlett) took silver medal honors in the foil, while sophomore Ayodeji Awolusi (Brooklyn, N.Y./Canarsie) finished in second place in the sabre.
On the womens side, junior Marisa Mustilli (South Orange, N.Y./Columbia) finished in second place in the sabre, sophomore Emese Takacs (Budapest, Hungary/R.F. Budapest) finished in second place in the epee and freshman Jean Hergenhan (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) finished in eighth place in the foil.
The Red Storm continue their trek toward the NCAA Championships next weekend, competing at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, being held on March 11.
