EUEGEN, Ore. – For the third time in her storied career, St. John's track and field standout Jamora Alves became just the second Johnnie to record three or more All-America honors in program history, placing 14th in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
The Grenada native earned her first All-America Second Team selection for her efforts on Saturday afternoon.
The senior used a toss of 54.95 meters (180 feet, 3 inches) in the second round to move into 12th place. Alves ultimately finished the competition in 14th, marking the highest finish by a Johnnie at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since 2016.
Alves becomes the first All-America Second Team honoree for the Red Storm since Claire Mooney placed 15th in the 800-meter run in 2016.
With Alves securing her third All-America honor, she joins Priscilla Frederick as one of only two student-athletes in program history to claim three or more All-America selections. Frederick was a four-time All-American from 2010-12 in the high jump.
The thrower wraps up her St. John's career as the program record holder in the indoor shot put and the discus throw.
Last week, she used a second-round personal-best toss of 57.56 meters (188 feet, 10 inches) in the discus at the NCAA East Regional at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and
Field Facility in Lexington, Ky., to secure her third trip to the national championship meet.
The toss marked the second time in as many meets that Alves broke both the program and Grenada national records. At the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, she secured her ninth BIG EAST individual title, smashing a 28-year-old program record in the discus with a toss of 55.89 meters (183 feet, 4 inches).
