St. Johns Soccer Players Earn Preseason Honors

Joseph was named a second-team preseason All-American by CollegeSoccer.com and College Soccer News, formerly known as Mad Dog Soccer, a site dedicated exclusively to the promotion and advancement of collegiate mens soccer. Joseph, who was also selected to the All-BIG EAST preseason team, led the Red Storm in scoring last season with 14 goals and two assists for 30 points. A first-team All-BIG EAST selection last year, Josephs 14 goals is tied for the fifth-best single season mark in school history.
Matteo, meanwhile, was named an honorable mention All-America by CollegeSoccer.com and was named a third-team All-America by College Soccer News. A three-year starter for the Red Storm, Matteo was one of two SJU players to be named to the All-BIG EAST preseason team. He finished third on the team in scoring last year, with two goals and a team-high seven assists for 11 points.
Three freshmen - forward Chris Corcoran (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield), midfielder Matt Groenwald (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect Heights) and forward Peter Philipakos (Greenlawn, N.Y./Chaminad - were among a group of players selected among the Freshmen to Watch by College Soccer News. They lead a recruiting class that was rated 15th nationally by the site.
The Red Storm finished 14-5-2 overall last season, reaching their ninth-straight NCAA Tournament, and the Sweet Sixteen for the fifth-straight season. The team opens the season up on August 31 at Indiana in the adidas Classic Tournament.
