I think it was a good first half, St. Johns Head Coach Dave Masur said. We didnt play very well in the second half, but we got a big goal from Jeff and its always good to win the first BIG EAST game.
A dominating St. Johns defense, led by sophomore center-back Chris Wingert (Babylon, N.Y.) contained the Friars (0-3, 0-1) in the first half, holding PC without a shot before the intermission.
Midway through the first half, Matteos shot from about 30 yards out beat PC goalie Danny Glynn, giving the Red Storm a 1-0 lead.
St. Johns had several chances in the first half, pounding the PC defense for 10 shots on goal, but were not able to capitalize.
It was much of the same in the second half as the Red Storm continued to assault the Providence defense, taking five shots on goal, while limiting the Friars to two shots.
SJU outshot the Friars, 15-2, and took seven corner kicks, while Providence attempted only one.
Our defense played very well, Masur said. They contained their shot-making ability. We still have some things to work on, but Im pleased to get the win.
The Red Storm play next on Wednesday, September 12, hosting Columbia in a game to be played at Baker Field on the Lions campus.
