Sophomore forward Angel Rodriguez (Toms River, N.J.) also earned Verizon Academic All-District honors, being named to the second team.
By being selected to the first team, Wingert is automatically nominated for the national ballot.
Wingert, who was named one of St. Johns tri-captains prior to this season, finished fourth on the team in scoring with six goals for 12 assists. After earning BIG EAST All-Rookie honors as a freshman in 2000, Wingert stepped into anchor the teams defense at the center-back position. He guided the Red Storm to their second-ever appearance in the NCAA Final Four and to their league record sixth BIG EAST Championship. St. Johns finished 17-3-3 overall and the Red Storm defense allowed only 15 goals all season, the fifth-best mark in school history.
Wingert was named second-team All-BIG EAST this season, first-team All-Northeast and earned honorable mention All-American honors from CollegeSoccerNews.com. He was recently selected to try out for United States Under-23 National Soccer Team, the group which should form the 2004 Olympic squad.
A communications arts major, Wingert carries a 3.82 grade-point average.
Rodriguez finished tied for second on the team in scoring with eight goals and two assists for 20 points. His eight goals were tied for the team lead and established a career-high as he started 22 of 23 games for the Red Storm this season. A sports management major, Rodriguez carries a 3.30 grade-point average.
This is the second-straight year the St. Johns mens soccer team has had two players earn Academic All-District honors.
