Double-digit points by Rainey (12) and Gulak (10) led the Red Storm to a 31-22 advantage in the first half. St. Johns controlled the first six minutes of the game, jumping out to an 11-3. FDU closed the gap to three (11-9) on two free throws by Kay Odenwaelder. St. Johns pushed back and opened up the game to 20-12 on a long jumper by Rainey. After leading by as much as 12 in the half, the Red Storm took a nine point advantage into the break.
St. Johns shot 50.0 percent from the field en route to a 39-point second half. Gulak continued to be hot, connecting on all eight shot attempts from the floor. With 11:05 remaining in the game, freshman Dana Petersens (Staten Island, N.Y.) three-point play, after being fouled on her made shot, put the Red Storm ahead by 20 (51-31) to seal the game. The Red Storm shot 75.0 percent from the foul line (12-16) in the half and finished the night with a 21-of-29 effort.
In addition to her 19 points on 60.0 percent shooting, Rainey had six rebounds, game-high four assists and two steals. Stevens dished out three assists while connecting on 7-9 from the line. Junior Kati Kurtosi (Miskolc, Hungary) notched six points and six rebounds on the night. Senior Creasie Fowler (Milwaukee, Wis.) and junior Crystal Andrews (West Bloomfield, Mich.) had six and five rebounds, respectively, helping the Red Storm tie a season-high with 43 total boards.
Natallia Marchanka led FDU with 10 points and two assists. Amanda Budkus and Kyrea Roberson added eight points apiece.
The Red Storm return to action on Sunday, December 15 at St. Peters College in Jersey City, N.J. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 pm.
