Delaware Outrebounds St. Johns For 63-47 Win

The game was decided on the boards and at the foul line. Delaware outrebounded St. Johns 51 to 25, with three players for the Fighting Blue Hens recorded double-figure rebounds in the game. 23 St. Johns fouls sent Delaware to the free-throw line 27 times, 19 of which they connected on. Meanwhile, the Red Storm committed a season-low 16 turnovers, while dishing out 12 assists.
In the first half scoring was slow for both teams, the score was stuck at 6-6 for nearly two and a half minutes. Delaware broke the shooting slump with 9-0 run, going up 15-6. After leading by as much as 11 in the half, the Fighting Blue Hens entered the break with a 27-20 advantage.
The Red Storm came out strong after the intermission, cutting the lead to three with baskets by senior Danielle Rainey (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Crystal Andrews (West Bloomfield, Mich.). Delaware built its lead back up to eight on a couple points by Allison Trapp. Junior Shemika Stevens (New York, N.Y.) put the Red Storm back in the game with a three and connecting on two free-throws. The Fighting Blue Hens advantage was down to four after sophomore Patrycja Gulak (Olsztyn, Poland) hit two shots from the foul line. The rest of the way Delaware would outscore St. Johns 24 to 13 to seal the win.
Stevens led St. Johns with 14 points, notching her fourth consecutive game with double-figure points. From behind the arc, Stevens hit four-of-six, while also grabbing a team-high five rebounds and recording a game-high four steals.
Andrews recorded her first game with double-figure points, knocking down 50.0 percent of her shots from the field, and finishing with 11 points. Raineys streak of 20-point games was snapped by Delawares defensive pressure. She had nine points and four rebounds, while dishing out a team-high four assists.
Julie Sailer (16 points and 10 rebounds) and Tiara Malcom (10 points and 10 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles for Delaware. Trapp had a game-high 24 points, on eight field goals and eight free-throws.
The Red Storm return to action on Saturday, December 7 versus Fordham University at 1pm in South Orange, N.J. The game is part of the First Annual Metro Challenge, being held at Seton Hall University. Seton Hall will take on Fairfield University in the second game of the double-header.
