Hoyas Slip By Red Storm, 60-53

The Red Storm scored the first four points of the game, but the remainder of the half would belong to the Hoyas. Georgetown scored the next 10 points, led by Rebekkah Brunson, who had six. SJU committed 10 fouls in the first, sending Georgetown to the line 16 times. The Hoyas connected on 11 free throws and entered halftime with a 32-19 advantage.
Georgetown took a 45-23 lead on a basket by Brunson at the 14:56 mark. The Red Storm responded by outscoring the Hoyas 30-15 during the final minutes of play. A free throw by freshman Patrycja Gulak (Olsztyn, Poland) pulled SJU to within 10 with 1:28 left to play. Sophomore Shemika Stevens (New York, N.Y.) got the ball to freshman Mary Pat Statler (New Cumberland, W.Va.) for a three with 32 seconds on the clock. The Red Storm would foul Mary Lisicky, who hit both, to give the Hoyas the 59-50 lead. Senior Kenyawna Hudgens (Washington, D.C.) would pull St. Johns to within six with a basket from behind the arc, on a pass from sophomore Nora Gyuris (Pecs, Hungary). Georgetown recorded one final free throw to seal the 60-53 win.
Statler led the Red Storm in scoring with a game-high 18, knocking down 4-of-6 from three-point range. Statler also had a game-high four steals, two rebounds and two assists. Stevens chipped in 15 points, dishing out a team-high four assists, and grabbing three rebounds. Gulak and junior Creasie Fowler (Milwaukee, Wis.), who has led the Red Storm in rebounding for three straight games, each had eight boards on the night. Gulak also had seven points, the only block of the game, and a steal. Hudgens and Gyuris both posted five points and three rebounds in the game.
Brunson led Georgetown, recording 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Mary Lisicky had 14 for the Hoyas, and Nok Duany added 11 points and a game-high nine boards.
The Red Storm return to action next Saturday, February 23 at 2:00pm when they host Boston College at Alumni Hall. This game will mark the final home game for three St. Johns seniors, Rasheedah Brown, Kenyawna Hudgens and Telisha Warner.
