Softball Wins Two at Winthrop Invitational

In the first game of the day, the Red Storm topped Coastal Carolina, 3-2. Freshman Meghan Allman gave up two runs on five hits, struck out eight and walked three in seven innings. SJU got on the board first, scoring in the top of the first inning. Alesha Argeras led off the game with a double and then scored on a sacrifice hit by Jessica Shepherd. Coastal Carolina responded with two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by Fortune. In the top of the second St. John's tied the game at two when Amy Crook, who reached on a walk, scored on a sacrifice fly by Shepherd. Allman held Coastal Carolina scoreless for the final six innings and the Red Storm scored the go-ahead run in the fifth. Argeras led the inning off with a single and later scored on a double by Jillian Sandoval. The Red Storm finished with two runs, five hits, and two errors, to Coastal Carolina's two runs, five hits and two errors.
In the nightcap, the Red Storm downed Eastern Illinois, 10-1. Cecilia Baston led the Red Storm with three RBI on the day. Baston drove in one run on a triple in the third inning and two more on a single in the seventh. Ann Raab also added two RBI on two hits for SJU. Tiffany Howerton clocked a solo homerun to lead off the top of the fifth inning. Allman gave up one earned run on three hits, while striking out three.
The Red Storm return to action tomorrow at 9am when they face Mercer, followed by a 11 am game vs. Morehead State.
