Freshman Meghan Allman (San Diego, Calif.) pitched a seven inning shutout in the first game. In her third consecutive shutout, Allman gave up just three hits while striking out eight.
The Red Storm got on the board in the fourth inning when freshman Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.) doubled to drive in freshman Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.), who had walked, and senior Tiffany Howerton (Escondido, Calif.), who had also doubled. Senior Amy Crook (Belleville, Ill.) and junior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) each added an RBI in the inning. The Red Storm sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning, posting four runs on five hits and one error.
Sainz added another double in the fifth and scored on a miscue by the center fielder. Senior Ceceila Baston (Falmouth, Maine) doubled to knock senior Ann Raab (Freehold, N.J.) in to put the Red Storm ahead, 6-0. For Sacred Heart, Michele Walker allowed eight hits, five earned runs and two walks in six innings.
In the second game of the day, Howerton scored the lone run of the game on a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. This is Howertons second homerun at Red Storm Field. She hit the first ever home run at the new field on May 6, 2001. On the day, Howerton had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI.
Allman gave up six hits, no walks and struck out four to stop the Pioneers for her fourth consecutive shutout. For Sacred Heart (5-7), Lauren Lapinski gave up six hits, one earned run, one walk while striking out five.
Prior to today only St. Johns had played only two other games on Red Storm Field. The field was used for Senior Day last year on May 6, 2001.
The Red Storm open BIG EAST action this weekend with games at Connecticut on Saturday and Syracuse on Sunday.
