Red Storm Split with LIU

In game one, the Red Storm opened the scoring in the top of the third inning. Junior Jessica Cameron (Girard, Ohio) led off with a line drive past the third baseman and junior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) used a sac bunt to move Cameron to second. Junior Jessica Shepherd (Akron, Ohio) followed with a hit to deep left center to drive in Cameron. With Shepherd on second, senior Tiffany Howerton (Escondido, Calif.) sent a hit through the right side for the second Red Storm run of the game.
LIUs Leah Sanchez responded by hitting a homerun over the right field wall to lead off the bottom of the inning. The next batter, Sayde Marzolf reached on a throwing error by the Red Storm pitcher, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Rosette Rough would reach on a throwing error by SJUs third baseman and Marzolf scored to tie the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Blackbirds took a 4-2 lead led by a two RBI hit by pitcher Crystal Eubanks. Tiffany Cooley led off the inning with a single up the middle to make her LIUs all-time leader in hits (185) and then stole second base. Cooley and Sonia Zapata, who walked, both scored on the single by Eubanks to give the Blackbirds the 4-2 advantage.
Eubanks earned her 19th win of the year for Long Island, giving up two runs on five hits. For the Red Storm, freshman Meghan Allman (San Diego, Calif.) allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out four and walking two.
In game two, freshman Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) got the Red Storm started with a single to left field in the fourth inning. Senior Kelly Houghton (Millsboro, Del.) reached on an infield hit to put runners on first and second with two outs. Freshman Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.) hit a shot to left center for 10th double of the year and driving in two runs.
The Red Storm added another run in the fifth inning when Cameron led off with a hit through the left side, and Argeras followed with a walk. Shepherd then hit a ground ball to the shortstop, but a muffed play at third allowed SJU to load the bases. Sandoval then walked, allowing Cameron to score her second run of the day, and give the Red Storm the 3-0 lead.
Senior Amy Crook (Belleville, Ill.) led off the top of the seventh inning with a double to the center field wall. Cameron then advanced Crook to third with a ground out. Argeras doubled over the left fielders head to drive in Crook for the Red Storms fourth run. Shepherd moved Argeras to third on a sac bunt and Argeras scored on a wild pitch for the 5-0 lead.
Allman (20-25) went to the distance for the Red Storm, giving up just three hits and striking out four. Chelsea Crosby took the loss for the Blackbirds, allowing two earned runs in four innings. Jackie Brown pitched three inning of relief for LIU, giving up three earned runs on three hits and three walks.
The Red Storm return to action on Saturday, April 27 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. The BIG EAST doubleheader is slated for noon.
