A formal press conference introducing Barnes-Arico will be held on Tuesday, May 14 at Alumni Hall at 12:30 p.m.
I am very excited for the opportunity to be a part of St. Johns and coach in the BIG EAST Conference against the highest level of competition in womens college basketball, Barnes-Arico said, upon her appointment. It will be a great challenge but I know the St. Johns community will provide a positive environment and the support necessary to succeed.
Barnes-Arico spent the last three seasons (1999-2002) at Adelphi where she compiled a 65-24 record for a winning percentage of .730. She took the Panthers to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II Tournament last season and ended the year ranked #12 nationally with a 28-3 mark.
She replaces interim coach Pechone Stepps. Stepps took over for Darcel Estep, who was relieved of her duties on January 18, 2002.
Kims ties to the New York and New Jersey basketball communities will be a great asset to St. Johns University, said David C. Wegrzyn, Vice President for University Development and Athletics. Kim has shown a great deal of poise and leadership in her previous three coaching positions and shell be a great addition to the St. Johns Athletic Department staff.
The 31-year old Mastic Beach native received Coach of the Year honors this post season given by the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference and the NIT/Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association for her stellar 2001-2002 campaign.
Adelphi also ran off 21 consecutive wins to start the season and the team won the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship with a 22-2 record this year.
Prior to her head coaching stint at Adelphi, Barnes-Arico served as head womens basketball coach at New Jersey Institute of Technology (1997-1999) and at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Madison (Madison, NJ) from 1996-1997.
A scholar athlete and three-year letter winner at Montclair State University (1990-1993), Barnes-Arico served as captain and leading scorer her junior and senior seasons.
Barnes-Arico resides in Teaneck, New Jersey with her husband Larry (head football coach at William Paterson in New Jersey) and their son Trevor (nine months old).
