Pellicane comes to St. Johns after spending the last 15 coaching at Dowling College in Oakdale, New York.
Joe brings 30 years of basketball knowledge, having coached both men and women on various levels, to our staff. His experience will help tremendously with both recruiting and the xs and os of basketball, said Barnes Arico. With his daughter Lauren having played at Villanova, Joe understands the BIG EAST conference and the level of play we will face this year.
This past season Pellicane led Dowling to 21 wins, breaking the school record for wins (17) set during his first season as head coach in 2000-01. In his two years at the helm, the Golden Lions compiled a record of 38-20 (.655 winning percentage).
Prior to taking over the womens program, Pellicane served as the mens head coach at Dowling from 1986 through 1999. His Golden Lions made two NCAA Tournament appearances (1995, 1998) and three ECAC Tournament appearances (1988, 1994, 1996). A two-time New York Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Pellicanes 1998 squad finished the season ranked 17th in the nation. In 1988, after capturing the ECAC Championship, Pellicane was named Big Apple Coach of the Year. Pellicane recorded a 205-161 overall record.
LaForce-Mann comes to St. Johns from Long Island University after six seasons as an assistant coach.
I see Daynia as being a great asset to the program. She brings valuable BIG EAST experience to the staff, having been a standout at Georgetown, Barnes Arico commented. Also, hailing from Brooklyn, Daynia will be instrumental in our New York City and metropolitan area recruiting.
LaForce-Mann was a member of the staff that saw the Blackbirds vault from a 2-24 record in 2000 to a 16-15 mark in 2001, earning the NEC championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. This past season the Blackbirds compiled an 18-12 record and advanced to the NEC championship game for the second straight year.
No stranger to the BIG EAST, LaForce-Mann played four seasons at Georgetown University. She ranks among the schools all-time blocked shots leaders and was known for her presence inside and rebounding. In her senior season, she set a career-high with 24 points and added 14 rebounds against Villanova in the BIG EAST Tournament. LaForce-Mann averaged 8.0 points and 3.8 rebounds in her senior year and 8.6 and 4.6 as a junior. In 1993, when LaForce-Mann was a sophomore, the Hoyas won the BIG EAST Championship and advanced to the "Sweet 16."
Shannon Farley joins the St. Johns staff after having played for and coached with Barnes Arico at Adelphi.
Having been a player and assistant coach for me during the last three years, Shannon is fully aware of my expectations both on and off the court. She knows what type of players I like to recruit and what I demand on the court. Her previous experience with my program will be beneficial as we begin our work at St. Johns, Barnes Arico said.
Farley was a four-year letterwinner for Adelphi from 1997-2001. She also participated in the inaugural season of womens lacrosse at Adelphi as a senior.
Jackie Smith makes the move to the BIG EAST after serving as an assistant coach under Barnes Arico for the past two seasons at Adelphi University.
Barnes Arico said, Jackie brings indispensable on and off the court experience to her new role. Through her work in the business world and her time as an assistant coach, Jackie developed important skills which will help this program succeed.
While at Adelphi, Smith assisted with recruitment process, organized tape exchange, developed preseason and postseason individual workouts and aided with daily practice and game strategies.
Prior to her stint in Garden City, Smith was an assistant coach at Nassau Community College from 1999-2000. At Nassau, she worked with the post players on strengthening both offensive and defensive moves.
