Last weekend, in a 3-0 win over perennial national power Indiana, the Red Storm scored two goals in the first five minutes of the game en route to the win.
On Wednesday, they wasted even less time. Junior midfielder Simone Salinno (Lucera, Italy) took a shot from 10-yards out, off a pass from sophomore Andre Schmid (Sacramento, Calif.), beating Adelphi goalkeeper and giving St. Johns a 1-0 lead just 1:01 second into the game. Senior Rich Bradley (Bayport, N.Y.) was credited with an assist on the goal.
Less than 10 minutes later, at the 8:27 mark, Salinno sent a ball to Bradley on the near sideline. Bradley sent a pass up the middle of the field, through three defenders, where it was met by sophomore Chris Corcoran (Marshfield, Mass.), whose picked the ball up before the goalkeeper and sent a shot from 11-yards out to the lower post, giving St. Johns a 2-0 lead.
The Red Storm added a third goal before the end of the first half. A loose ball after a throw-in fell to the feet of freshman Jeff Carroll (Alexandria, Va.), who crossed the ball to the far post to Corcoran. Corcoran immediately sent it back to the near post, where Wingert put it past Yatsenko for the three-goal margin.
Adelphi (0-4) had its best shot early in the second half when Drew Padraiq picked up a loose ball and fired a shot on goal, with Red Storm senior goalkeeper Nate Tickner (Minneapolis, Minn.) out of position, but the shot was saved by Wingert to preserve the shutout.
Junior Bill Gaudette (Hummelstown, Pa.) played into the second half before being relieved by Tickner, who was seeing his first action this season.
St. Johns outshot Adelphi, 15-6, and took 13 corner kicks, while the Panthers attempted only one.
The Red Storm, who won their third-straight and improved to 3-1 overall, host Virginia Tech on Saturday at 8 p.m. at DaSilva Memorial Field.
