9/14/2002 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
In the first half of play, St. Johns got off to a slow start as Virginia Tech kept 10 men back in the defensive zone keeping the Red Storm outside the box for most of the half. St. Johns would outshoot the Hokies 5-2 for the half but could not break through on the scoreboard.
The second half was a different story as St. Johns controlled the tempo for most of the half. The Red Storm were able to break through the Hokie defensive quickly when Rich Bradley (Bayport, N.Y.) headed home a pass, off a free kick 25 yards out, from junior Chris Wingert (Babylon, N.Y.) at 51:22 of the second half. The goals was Bradleys second of the year and the first assist for Wingert. Up front, junior Angel Rodriguez (Toms River, N.J.), and sophomores Andre Schmidt (Sacramento, Calif.) and Chris Corcoran (Marshfield, Mass.) kept the pressure on the Hokies all night combining for total of 10 shots.
Junior goalie Bill Gaudette (Hummelstown, Pa.) , who earned his fourth victory of the season, was solid between the pipes turning away two Virginia Tech shots. Defenders Chris Leidner (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and Bradley contributed on the back line preserving the shutout for the Red Storm.
St. Johns outshot Virginia Tech, 13-6, and held a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks.
The Red Storm, who won their fourth-straight and improved to 4-1 overall, travel to play Villanova on Wednesday, September 18 at 3:30 p.m.
