At the same time, when you play the schedule the third-ranked Red Storm do, youre always liable to face someone who you played at one time or another at a crucial time.
That the Red Storm lost to the Hoosiers in last years Final Four was certainly motivation enough.
And St. Johns used that motivation, scoring two goals in the opening minutes of the game en route to a 3-0 win over the Hoosiers as the Red Storm claimed the team championship at the tournament, held at the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
This was a good win for our program, Head Coach Dave Masur said. Im sure some of the guys had last year in their mind, but more than anything, this was a good measuring stick for us. We still have some work to do, but it was a good win.
The Red Storm came out on the offensive immediately. Just under two minutes into the game, junior Tim ONeill (Philadelphia, Pa.) sent a corner kick to the near post, where it was met by classmate Chris Wingert (Babylon, N.Y.), who was making a near-post run. Wingert one-timed it from 10-yards out and IU goalkeeper Jay Nolly was able to get his hands on it, but it hit the post and went in, giving St. Johns a 1-0 lead.
Nearly two minutes later, off a throw-in from ONeill that bounced in front of the net, senior Rich Bradley (Bayport, N.Y.) headed the ball over Nolly, giving the Red Storm a 2-0 lead.
Indiana had a pair of chances early in the half, with a header from Pat Noonan and a shot from Ryan Mack, but both were saved by junior goalkeeper Bill Gaudette (Hummelstown, Pa.). After a shot from Noonan went wide late in the first half, the Red Storm countered. Shots from sophomore Andre Schmid (Sacramento, Calif.) and junior Angel Rodriguez (Toms River, N.J.) were just off the mark and the Red Storm went into the intermission with a 2-0 advantage.
The Red Storm, who controlled play in the offensive end for most of the second half, added a third goal late in the second half when Rodriguez, off a set piece, took a low, hard shot that beat the IU keeper to the near post.
St. Johns outshot Indiana, 9-7, and took five corner kicks to the Hoosiers 2, while Gaudette made three saves in goal. The Red Storm had four players named to the All-Tournament team, seniors Bradley and Pat Lonergan (Millington, N.J.), Gaudette and freshman Jeff Carroll (Alexandria, Va.). Other members of the All-Tournament team included Indianas Ryan Mack, Pat Noonan and Danny ORourke, Florida Internationals Roy Rosenberg and Mark Stephenson, along with William & Marys Phillip Hucles and Andreas Nydal.
St. Johns, winners of two straight, improves to 2-1-0 this season, while Indiana falls to 1-1-2. The Red Storm return to action on Wednesday, September 11 when they play Adelphi.
