Jamaica, N.Y. - The St. Johns softball team was picked to finish 7th of 11 squads in the 2003 BIG EAST Softball preseason coaches' poll released last week by the conference office in Providence, R.I.
Notre Dame, the 2002 BIG EAST champion, was picked to finish first for the second straight year. Syracuse, who made its first appearance in the BIG EAST Championship last year, in just its second year in the league, ranks second in the poll.
The Red Storm return six starters from last year's team, including BIG EAST Rookie Team selection, pitcher Meghan Allman. St. Johns finished the 2002 season with a 23-30-1 mark and a 5-12 record (t-9th place) in BIG EAST action.
St. Johns will open its 2003 campaign at the Triangle Classic Tournament, on Feb. 14-16.
