St. Johns Falls to No. 21 Notre Dame

Junior guard Shemika Stevens (New York, N.Y.) scored seven of the Red Storms first 11 points, to put her team up 11-8 to start the first half. Notre Dames Teresa Borton knocked down the next five points, but senior Creasie Fowler (Milwaukee, Wis.) responded with a basket to tie the game at 13. Batteast connected on her first shot of the night, a three-point field goal, after starting the game 0-5 at 10:57 remaining. The teams continued to match baskets until Notre Dame opened a 22-1 run over the final 8:08 of the first half. The Irish scored the final 16 points of the half to head into the break with a 42-19 lead.
The Red Storm got hot from behind the arc in the second half, knocking down four, two apiece from Stevens and junior Reka Szavuly (Miskolc, Hungary). Szavuly had all eight of her points in the second half, while Stevens posted 10 after the intermission. The Irish outscored St. Johns just 29-23 to close the game.
LaVere also recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 boards. Borton had19 points for the Fighting Irish, who improve 10-4 on the season and 2-1 in the BIG EAST.
Stevens, who emerged from a recent slump, notched a career-high 17 points, including four three-pointers. In addition to her eight points, Szavuly had three assists, three steals and three rebounds. Fowler also finished with eight points. Junior Kati Kurtosi (Miskolc, Hungary) grabbed four boards for the Red Storm.
The Red Storm (6-9, 0-4) return to action on Saturday, January 18th when they host the University of Pittsburgh at Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, N.J. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
