1/27/2003 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The Red Storm are coming off a 1-1 week in which they earned their first conference win since the 2000-01 season and played to double-overtime with nationally-ranked Rutgers. The Red Storm snapped their 24-conference game losing streak with a win over Providence on Jan. 22. St. Johns previous BIG EAST win came on Feb. 20, 2001 at home vs. Syracuse.
The trio of senior Danielle Rainey (Los Angeles, Calif.) and juniors Shemika Stevens (New York, N.Y.) and Reka Szavuly (Miskolc, Hungary) led the Red Storm to their best week of the season to date. The trio each posted double-figure points in the last two games, scoring 101 of the Red Storms total 131. They knocked down 18 threes, shot 44.3 percent from the field and dished out nine assists per game.
In the double-overtime game vs. the Scarlet Knights, Stevens notched 18 points, five rebounds and five assists. Rainey, still not a full strength from her injury, had 20 points, and Szavuly knocked down four threes, including one to tie the game with 1:28 remaining, for 12 points.
To help snap St. Johns five-game losing streak, Stevens notched her first career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds at Providence. Rainey returned to action and chipped in 17 points, including crucial free-throws down the stretch. Szavuly also posted double-figure points with 15.
