Red Storm Tops Long Island 6-1

On the singles side, St. John's continued their strong play as they took the first five singles matches. Sophomore Lauren Leo (Staten Island, N.Y.) was victorious at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Veronica Apostu-Efremou. At No. 2 singles, junior Kristina Bothova (Bratislava, Slovakia) remained undefeated (7-0) for the fall season with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Merue Koksal. Juniors Hande Gorur (Istanbul, Turkey), Allison Davidson (Cedar Falls, Iowa) and Jennifer Liantonio (West Hempstead, N.Y.), playing at No. 3 through No. 5 singles, all swept their matches from their opponents in two sets.
The Red Storm took No. 1 and No. 2 doubles on their way to gaining the point for doubles. At No. 1 doubles, the team of Bothova and Davidson downed Apostu-Efremou and Krystina Bachner of LIU 8-4, while Gorur and Leo took care of Kuksal and Ellen Anolin 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
The Red Storm completes their fall schedule at the ITA Regional during the weekend of October 24-26. The tournament, featuring the top collegiate players in the Northeast, will be held at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.
