The loss ends the Red Storm?s five-game win streak, and six without a loss, dropping them to 10-4-1 overall, and 6-2-0 in the BIG EAST. The Hokies, meanwhile, improved to 10-3-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the league, with four wins in their last five games, including Rutgers and defending BIG EAST Champion Boston College.
The Red Storm had taken a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but the Hokies answered back to tie the game and Dustin Dyer scored the game-winner with less than eight minutes left to seal the win.
St. John's struck first for a 1-0 lead. At 59:03, sophomore Sebastian Alvarado-Ralph (Gothenburg, Sweden) headed in a shot past Hokie keeper Chase Harrison for his fourth goal of the season. Junior Chris Leidner (Greenlawn, N.Y.) was credited with the assist after Harrison deflected his shot.
However, the Hokies answered at 61:57 when Nason got a pass from Greg Roach and sent a cross into the box for Ken Jonmaire. Jonmaire slapped a shot past St. John?s senior goalkeeper Bill Gaudette (Hummelstown, Pa.) to tie the match at 1-1.
At 82:40, with the match tied at 1-1, St. John's was called for a foul just outside its own keeper's box. Virginia Tech was awarded an indirect kick. After Peer Rogge tapped it to his teammate, Dyer sent a shot careening, which escaped Gaudette and into the bottom right corner of the net for his first goal of the year.
The Hokies managed 17 shots on the night, and that came against a team leading the BIG EAST in fewest shots allowed. The Red Storm generated 14 shots, including eight on-goal.
St. John?s returns to action on Friday, October 24, hosting Boston College in a crucial conference match at Belson Stadium at 7:30 p.m. The team will play again on Saturday night, hosting Florida International on Senior Night.
