Women's Golf Fall Review And Spring Preview

The St. John's women's golf team entered its second ever season looking to improve on a solid first season. The team fell just short of the four-team 2003 BIG EAST championship and has set the goal of making it to the 2004 BIG EAST Championships. The team returns all of its players and under the guidance of first year head coach Cindy Mueller the 2003-04 is shaping up to be a an exciting one.
Mueller is no stranger to collegiate golf as she had a storied amateur career at the University of Kentucky. She was an NCAA All-American, All-SEC, won individual medallist honors at the Lady Buckeye Invitational and was the Illinois State Amateur Champion in 1985 and 1987, as well as runner up in 1986 and 1988.
In the fall of 2003, the team showed tremendous improvement from its inaugural season, posting three top-five finishes in four events. The best finish of the fall came at the Rutgers Invitational where four Red Storm golfers posted individual top-10 finishes. The team finished ahead of BIG EAST foes Georgetown and Rutgers, aiding their chances for a postseason berth. Individual at the Rutgers invitational, Jaclyn Sanders finished tied for second carding an eight-over par 152. Jenifer Rhee carded the top score during the final round, an even-par 72, moving 24 spots up the leader board to finish tied for sixth. Christin Thomson and sophomore Maggie Steciuk both finished tied for ninth at 12-over par 156.
For the 2003 fall season, Sanders' led the way with three top-10 and two top-five finishes. Thomson finished with two top-10 finishes, while Steciuk posted one top-10 and three top-20 finishes. Rhee finished with one yop-10 and Katie Lebel's best finish on the season came when she tied for tied for 35th at the Dartmouth Invitational.
The team is excited for the beginning of the 2004 sprung season and is expecting to play a tough northeast schedule. The team will come together with one goal in mind and that is to qualify for the programs fist ever postseason tournament.
