In 1981 softball debuted as a varsity sport. The program also is the benefactor of a new on-campus facility built in 2001. A list of highlights is detailed below:
- Meghan Allman named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team (2002)
- Two Verizon Academic All-Americans in 2002 (Lisa Tropea, Alesha Argeras)
- One NIT Academic All-American (Tropea - 2002)
- Set school record for wins in a single season with 32 in 1990
- Four all-BIG EAST first team selections
- Nine all-BIG EAST second team selections
- Two BIG EAST all-rookie team selection
- Four BIG EAST tournament appearances
- Runner-up in first-ever BIG EAST tournament in 1990
