COLUMBUS, OHIO - The St. John's women's basketball team fell to Ohio State, 67-53, this afternoon in Columbus. The Red Storm, who fall to 4-5 on the season will play either Dayton or Pennsylvania in tomorrow's consolation match, which is scheduled to begin at Noon.
Led by three players in double-digits, the Red Storm fought throughout the game, closing within seven with under five minutes to play, but could not catch the 17th ranked Buckeyes late in the game.
After trailing by as many as 17, St. John's outscored Ohio State 7-0 over the final 2:50 of the first half to cut the Buckeye lead to 31-21 at the half.
Ohio State opened the game outscoring St. John's 11-3, but Kim MacMillan's (Toms River, N.J.) second three of the game and a basket by Shemika Stevens (New York, N.Y.) cut the lead to three. The Buckeyes pulled ahead with a 16-2 run over the next seven minutes before the Red Storm chipped away at the lead with baskets by Angie Clark (Copiague, N.Y.) and Secrett Stubblefield (Fairfax, Va.) to end the half.
St. John's shot 60% from the field over the first five and a half minutes of the second half to pull within eight. Danielle Chambers (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who was playing in her first game since transferring to St. John's, hit a lay-up to bring St. John's within six, the closest they'd come. Ohio State answered with two-straight three's and built a 14-point lead with 6:15 remaining.
Clark's jumper on the next possession was followed by a three from MacMillan and then two free throws from Clark, as the Red Storm pulled within seven with 4:55 remaining.
Ohio State outscored St. John's 11-4 over the final minutes to take the game 67-53 and improve to 6-1 on the season.
Clark finished with a game-high 15 points and registered her seventh double double of the season adding 12 rebounds, while MacMillan finished with 14 and Stubblefield added 10. Chambers and Kati Kurtosi (Miskolc, Hungary) added six a piece. Michelle Munoz had 12 points for Ohio State, who shot 53.1% from the floor.
