Softball Drops Two At Triangle Classic Tournament

In the first game against UNC Charlotte, sophomore Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) ripped a double to right centerfield which scored senior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) from second to notch the Red Storms only run of the afternoon. Senior Courtney Fitzgerald (Bellerose, N.Y.) pitched four innings and gave up one run on three hits and recorded six strikeouts before being replaced by freshman Melanie Lehman (Placerville, Calif.). Lehman took the loss giving up two runs on four hits in her two innings of work. In the fourth inning, UNC Charlotte broke the game open scoring two runs to put them ahead for good. In her first collegiate game, freshman Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) went 2 for 3, with two singles in game one.
In the second game against Illinois, a walk-off grand slam by Illinois second baseman Katie OConnell sealed the victory for the Fighting Illini as they went on to win 9-0. Fitzgerald again took the mound for the Red Storm giving up nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits during her 4 2/3 innings of work. Sophomore Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman Jessica Marical (Stanton, Calif.) each had went 1 of 2 in the second game for St. Johns.
The St. Johns Softball team returns to action on Saturday, February 15, when they continue play at the Triangle Classic Tournament at 11 a.m. when they square off against Liberty.
