In the first game against ECU, both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Pirates broke the game open, scoring three runs on two hits and two errors which was all they would need to secure the victory. The Red Storm was lead by senior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) and sophomore Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) who each went 1 for 3 in game one. Senior pitcher Courtney Fitzgerald (Bellerose, N.Y.) took the loss for St. Johns, going six innings and giving up two earned runs on three hits, with five strikeouts.
In game two against Towson, St. Johns had their best offensive output of the young season, racking up four runs on eight hits. Leading the way for the Red Storm was Argeras, whose two run homerun to left centerfield gave St. Johns two much needed insurance runs, as Towson made a push with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Also, sophomores Sandoval (2 for 3, one RBI) and Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.) (2 for 4, two runs scored) helped pace the offensive attack. Fitzgerald was again in the circle for St. Johns giving up only one hit, to the first batter of the game, in seven innings of work.
The St. Johns softball team returns to action on Saturday, February 21, when they will face off against the University of Delaware at 9 am and Fordham University at 11 am, on the second day of the Pirate Classic Tournament.
