Mountaineers Squeak By Red Storm, 68-59

Junior Patrycja Gulak (Olsztyn, Poland) notched the Red Storm's first basket at 18:02, tying the game at 2-2. West Virginia then went on a 14-0 run, holding St. John's scoreless until 10:39 when Stevens knocked down a three. The Red Storm defense shut down WVU for over three minutes, while senior Creasie Fowler (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Gulak hit back-to-back jumpers to cut the Mountaineer lead to seven. West Virginia built its lead back up to 16 with 4:13 remaining. After scoring just nine points during the first 16 minutes of the half, the Red Storm tallied 10 in the last four. For WVU, Katie Bulger hit four three's in the first half to give the Mountaineers the 30-19 advantage at the break.
Gulak got St. John's started in the seconf half with a three followed by a layup, pulling the Red Storm to within eight. The Mountaineers took an 18-point lead at 6:56 on a jumper by Bulger. From that point, the Red Storm outscored West Virginia, 19-10. Stevens got fouled on three-point attempt and connected on all three free throws to get SJU started. Junior Nora Gyuris (Pecs, Hungary) had all seven of her points in the final 2:46 to help close the gap, including two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to make it a nine-point game.
Stevens' 22 points came on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and a 5-of-5 effort from the line. She also dished out a career-high six assists and grabbed five boards. 16 of Stevens' game-high 22 came in the second half, despite playing with three fouls.
Gulak also recorded double-figures, chipping in 11 in 20 minutes of action. Gyuris and junior Angie Leung (Richmond Hill, N.Y.) each poured in seven. Fowler grabbed a team-high seven boards.
Four Mountaineers (14-10, 3-10) scored in double-figures, led by 19 from Bulger. Eartha White finished with 15 and a game-high eight rebounds.
West Virginia outrebounded the Red Storm, 46-29, but shot just 40.7 percent to SJU's 40.0 from the field.
The Red Storm (8-17, 2-12) return to action on Saturday, March 1 at 2:00pm at Alumni Hall when they host Georgetown University.
