In the first game against Fordham, St. Johns avenged an earlier loss to the Rams, beating them, 2-1, in eight innings. The Red Storm scored their first run in the fourth inning when sophomore Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) singled to drive in senior Jessica Shepherd (Akron, Ohio) from third after having led off the inning with a single.
Fordham evened the score in the top of the seventh when Ivy Pollock came around to score to send the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, a Fordham error proved to be a costly one as it allowed freshman Jessica Marical (Stanton, Calif.) to score from second to seal the victory. Senior Courtney Fitzgerald (Bellerose, N.Y.) went the distance for the Red Storm allowing two hits and striking out nine.
In game two against Delaware, St. Johns rushed out to an early five run lead behind the bat of sophomore Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.), who went 2 for 3, with two doubles and two RBIs. Delaware cut into the St. Johns lead by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning, but were unable to overcome the deficit as the Red Storm held on to the victory by a score of 5-3. Fitzgerald was again the pitcher of record for St. Johns as she scattered four hits over seven innings.
For their efforts this past weekend, both Fitzgerald and Shepherd were selected to the All-Tournament team.
The St. Johns softball team returns to action on Friday, February 28, when the travel to California to compete in the Loyola Marymount Tournament. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set at 1 p.m.
