Red Storm Fall to No. 1 UConn

Red Storm junior Kati Kurtosi (Miskolc, Hungary) scored the first basket at the 19:13 mark. St. Johns defense kept the Huskies fans standing until 17:52 when Morgan Valley hit a short jumper. Buckets by senior Danielle Rainey (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Shemika Stevens (New York, N.Y.), gave Connecticut just a 10-6 advantage with 14:17 to play. UConn followed with three straight three-pointers, including two by Diana Taurasi, for the 22-6 lead. Connecticut hit seven threes and went to the line 12 times (10-12) to go into the break leading 47-23.
The Huskies defense clamped down on the Red Storm, allowing only nine points by SJU in the first 12 minutes of play. St. Johns managed 14 over the final eight minutes, giving UConn the 87-46 win.
Connecticut outrebounded St. Johns, 47 to 21, including 20 offensive boards. From the line, the Huskies connected on 22-of-29 attempts, while the Red Storm was 5-of-11.
Rainey posted a team-high 14 points, knocking down a season-high four from behind the arc.
Despite being held to just 27 minutes while battling foul trouble, Stevens put up 13 points, three steals and three assists. She connected on 5-10 from the field, shooting 50.0 or better for the third straight game.
Senior Creasie Fowler (Milwaukee, Wis.) pulled down a team-high nine boards, her second consecutive game with nine.
For Connecticut, freshman Barbara Turner dropped in 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while junior Jessica Moore added 16 points and six rebounds. While Willnett Crockett added 14, and Diana Taurasi and Ann Strother both contributed 12.
The Red Storm return to action on Saturday, February 8 when they travel to Miami, Fla. to take on the Hurricanes. Tip off is slated for 1:00 pm.
