Against the University of San Diego, St. Johns broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning as they scored five of their six runs in the game. Senior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) highlighted the inning with a two run double that helped put the game out of reach. Freshman Megan Oliver (Endicott, N.Y.) had a tremendous game, going 3 for 4, with three singles and scored a run. Senior pitcher Courtney Fitzgerald (Bellerose, N.Y.) went the distance for the Red Storm, allowing two runs and scattering six hits.
In the second game against Loyola, St. Johns took an early lead in the bottom of the third, when freshman Linda Reyes (Garden Grove, Calif.) came around to score the first run of the game off a sacrifice fly by senior Jessica Shepherd (Akron, Ohio). Loyola answered back in the top of the seventh when pitch hitter Tara Sheehans single drove in the tying run to send the game into extra innings.
In Loyolas half of the eighth inning, they were able to put up two runs after a homerun off the bat of Trisha Gomes. St. Johns was able to score one in the bottom of the eighth, but was unable to put the tying run across and Loyola went on to the victory. Freshman pitcher Melanie Lehman (Placerville, Calif.) got the start for St. Johns, going five innings and giving up six hits. Fitzgerald replaced Lehman in the sixth inning and was the pitcher of record, taking the extra inning loss for the Red Storm. Freshmen Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) and Reyes each went 2 for 4 in the game for St. Johns.
The St. Johns softball team returns to action tomorrow, March 2, when the conclude play in the LMU Tournament with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
