Softball Upsets #13 Ranked DePaul At Fresno State Tournament

Against DePaul, St. Johns jumped out early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first off sophomore Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) RBI single to centerfield and freshman Megan Olivers (Endicott, N.Y.) bases loaded walk. The Red Storm struck again in the third scoring Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.) from third on an error by DePaul and an RBI single to left field by senior Jessica Cameron (Girard, Ohio) earned St. Johns the convincing shutout victory. Senior Courtney Fitzgerald (Bellerose, N.Y.) , who was named to the All-Tournament Team, went the distance, giving up no runs and just three hits.
In the days first game Cal-Poly struck first, scoring in the bottom of the third on a Red Storm error to take a, 1-0, advantage. St. Johns answered back in the top of the fourth when Sainzs (2 for 3, in game one) singled to right field to drive in senior Jessica Shepherd (Akron, Ohio) from second to knot the score at, 1-1. In the top of the seventh St. Johns led the inning off with a triple by Sainz, who later scored on an error by the Cal-Poly shortstop. In the bottom of the inning Cal-Poly scored on a St. Johns error to tie the score at, 2-2, and send the game into extra innings.
With bases loaded in the top of the eighth for St. Johns they were unable to score, leaving the door wide open for the Mustangs. In their half of the inning, an RBI single by Cal-Poly right fielder Chelsea Green scored Rebecca Ramos from third for the extra inning victory. Fitzgerald was in the circle for St. Johns, giving up no earned runs and scattered four hits in her 7 1/3 innings of work.
In the second game of the afternoon against BYU, the cougars used a three run sixth inning to break a, 1-1, tie to put the game out of reach. St. Johns lone run came on an RBI single to center by freshman Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) scoring Jessica Marical (Stanton, Calif.) from second. Freshman Melanie Lehman (Placerville, Calif.) took the loss for St. Johns, going seven innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits.
The St. Johns softball team returns to action on March 14, when they travel to South Carolina to compete in the Winthrop Invitational Tournament beginning at 10 a.m.
