Softball Earns Split Against Seton Hall

In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.) drew a two out walk, her second of the game. Sophomore Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) singled to centerfield to put runners on first and second. Freshman Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) produced a hit up the middle, sending Sainz around from second. An on-target throw from Seton Halls centerfielder to the catcher nailed Sainz at home to end the inning for the Red Storm.
Seton Hall took a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning on one hit and two Red Storm errors. The Pirates scored on a SJU fielding miscue, followed by Darcy Djakalovic drawing a bases loaded walk, to put SHU up 2-0. Laura Taylor came up with a two RBI double for the 4-0 advantage.
The Red Storm cut the lead to two with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Jessica Shepherd (Akron, Ohio) led of the inning with a single to left field. Shepherd advanced to third on a double to the center field wall by senior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio). A groundout by Sainz allowed Shepherd to score the Red Storms first run. Argeras scored on a groundout by Sandoval to bring SJU within two.
Senior Courtney Fitzgerald (Bellerose, N.Y.) went the distance for the Red Storm, allowing four unearned runs on five hits while striking out three and walking two. She is now 17-15 on the season. Christina Shanko earned the win for Seton Hall, giving up two earned runs on six hits while striking out four and walking two.
In game two, the Red Storm got on the board in the bottom of the second with one run on three hits and one Seton Hall error. With one out, Sandoval reached on a throwing error and then advanced to second on a bloop single by Sherlock. Freshman Carrie Kester (Farmington, N.M.) had a clutch hit up the middle to load the bases for the Red Storm. Senior Jessica Cameron (Girard, Ohio) laid down a bunt with two out and beat the pitchers throw, allowing Sandoval to score and give St. Johns the 1-0 advantage.
St. Johns added another run in the fifth inning when Cameron led off with a single up the middle. She advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on sac bunt by Shepherd. Argerass RBI single allowed Cameron to score and put the Red Storm up 2-0.
Sophomore Meghan Allman (San Diego, Calif.) started the game for the Red Storm, working 5 2/3 innings. In a strong outing, Allman (5-2) allowed five hits, struck out six, and walked three. Fitzgerald came on in relief in the fifth with runners on first and second and ended the inning with a swinging strikeout. Fitzgerald worked 1 1/3 innings for her second save of the year, striking out three of the four batters she faced. For Seton Hall, Megan Meyer took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on nine hits, while striking out three and walking none.
The Red Storm return to action on Monday, April 21 with a doubleheader at Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Conn. First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.
