Freshman Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) hit a bases loaded double off the centerfield fence to put the Red Storm ahead 3-0 in the top of the first. Freshman Megan Oliver (Endicott, N.Y.) and senior Jessica Shepherd (Akron, Ohio) both reached base without hitting a ball out of the infield and sophomore Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.) walked to load the bases. With two out Sherlocks hit dropped in the gap, clearing the bases for the Red Storm.
The Red Storm added another run in the top of the fourth on a double to right field by Sainz. Shepherd reached on an error by the Sacred Heart second baseman and came around to score on Sainzs extra-base hit.
Freshman Jessica Marical (Stanton, Calif.) got the Red Storms two-run sixth inning started with a single to left field. With two out, Oliver singled to right field, allowing Marical to come around and score. Shepherd hit a short fly ball that Sacred Hearts left fielder couldnt handle, sending Oliver around from second.
Fitzgerald (18-15) did not allow a base runner until the fifth inning when the Pioneers recorded their only hit of the game. The Sacred Heart runner was eliminated on an Argeras-Shepherd-Sainz double play, ending a Pioneer threat. Fitzgerald faced just two batters over the minimum, walking one and striking out five.
In game two, the Red Storm took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh on a two-out two RBI double by sophomore Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.). Oliver got the inning started with a hit that dropped just inside the left field line. Shepherd laid down a bunt for the sacrifice, advancing Oliver to second. After continually battling to stay alive, Sainz drew a walk, to put runners at first and second. Sandoval then cleared the bases with a double to the centerfield wall, giving St. Johns the 2-1 advantage.
Sacred Heart took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on four straight hits. The Pioneers almost added another run, but the Red Storm ended the inning with a 3-2-3 double play.
Lehman allowed one run on six hits, striking out two and walking two in five innings. Fitzgerald worked the last two innings for her third save of the season. She struck out three and allowed one hit.
The Red Storm return to action on Wednesday, April 23, when they travel to Hofstra in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30.
