St. John's Shuts Out Manhattan

In the bottom of the third, the Red Storm added three more runs on two hits and an error. Oliver reached on an error and senior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) walked to put runners on first and second for Sainz. Sainz came up with a double to leftfield, sending Oliver home and Argeras around to third. Sophomore Jillian Sandovals (Orange, Calif.) hit dropped in between three Manhattan fielders for a two out two-RBI single. At the end of three, the Red Storm held a 5-0 advantage.
St. Johns would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on three hits. Sandoval got the inning started with a double to the centerfield wall. Freshman Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) followed with an RBI single to right field, sending Sandoval around from second. Sherlock stole second, but was caught in a rundown on a fielders choice by freshman Carrie Kester (Farmington, N.M.). With two outs senior Jessica Cameron (Girard, Ohio)notched her first extra-base hit, a triple to right field, allowing Kester to put the Red Storm up 7-0.
Allman (6-4) went 5.0 innings, striking out three and walking four. The only hit she allowed was a leadoff triple to Margaret LaFex, the first batter of the game. Freshman Melanie Lehman (Placerville, Calif.) worked the final two innings, facing nine batters, walking one, striking out two and not allowing a hit.
The Red Storm offense got started in the bottom of the second inning in game two. Sandoval walked and Sherlock was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for St. Johns. Freshman Jessica Marical (Stanton, Calif.) hit into a fielders choice, to keep runners on first and second for the Red Storm. A single up the middle by freshman Linda Reyes (Garden Grove, Calif.) allowed Sherlock to score SJUs first run of the game. Freshman Blair Belloni (Newport, Ore.) followed with her first career hit, an RBI single to right field. At the end of two the Red Storm held a 2-0 advantage.
St. Johns added another two runs in the third inning. Argeras, who walked, came around to score the Red Storms first run on a double to right field by Sainz. Sandoval then hit a single to right field, allowing Sainz to come across and give St. Johns the 4-0 lead.
Belloni and Oliver both came around to score on an infield hit by Shepherd in the bottom of the fourth inning for the 6-0 lead. Shepherd advanced to third on the throws trying to catch both Belloni and Oliver. Argeras hit a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Shepherd with the Red Storms seventh run of the game.
The game ended in the bottom of the fifth inning when Belloni hit her second RBI single of the day to right field, allowing Marical to score from third base. Marical led off the inning with a hit through the left side and Reyes followed with a hit up the middle to put runners on first and second for Belloni.
Allman got the start in game two for the Red Storm, working two innings, allowing four hits, striking out one and walking two. Lehman relieved Allman, giving up two hits and two walks in three innings for the win.
The Red Storm will play their final regular season games this week at Red Storm Field. On Wednesday, April 30, St. Johns faces St. Francis (NY) at 3:00 pm. The Red Storm doubleheader vs. Providence College has been rescheduled for Thursday, May 1 at 2:30 pm. The 2003 regular season will conclude next weekend when the Red Storm host Boston College on Saturday, May 3 and Connecticut on Sunday, May 4. Both BIG EAST doubleheader are slated for noon.
