The Red Storm took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by sophomore Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.). Freshman Megan Oliver (Endicott, N.Y.) notched her second hit of the game, a one base hit to centerfield to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt by senior Jessica Shepherd (Akron, Ohio) moved Oliver to second for Sainz, who hit one into short center.
In the fourth inning, Providence batted around scoring six runs on six hits. They added another in the fifth on a Cori Van Dusen solo homer.
The Red Storm started their comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning, started by Olivers third leadoff single. Shepherd followed with an RBI double to right field, allowing Oliver to score. With Sainz, who walked, on first and Shepherd on second, sophomore Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.) came through with a single, for SJUs second run of the inning. Marical hit a two-out double down the leftfield line, knocking in Sainz and Sandoval and closing the gap to 7-5.
St. Johns kept chipping away at Providences lead, adding another run in the sixth. With runners on second and third, Sandoval singled up the middle to drive Shepherd in from third. Argeras, who had singled through the left side to reach base, was thrown out at home plate to end the inning.
Sherlock led the seventh off with her sixth homerun of the year to knot the game at 7-all. The Red Storm would load the bases in the inning, but would be unable to capitalize.
Sainz got the Red Storm started in the eighth with a single through the left side and would advance to second on a sac bunt by Sandoval. With two out, Marical sent a hit to short right field, driving in Sainz with the winning run.
Freshman Melanie Lehman (Placerville, Calif.) got the win for the Red Storm, allowing six hits in five innings and giving up three earned runs. Lehman improved her record to 3-5 while walking one and striking out one. Sophomore Meghan Allman (San Diego, Calif.) made the start for St. Johns, going three innings, allowing two hits, four earned runs, two walks and striking out five.
The second game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Sherlock hit her seventh homerun of the season, a two run shot over the right centerfield fence, scoring Sandoval from first who had reached base on a single to center earlier in the inning.
St. Johns would be unable to hold off the Friars as they scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning. The inning was highlighted by a three-run homerun off the scoreboard in left field by Elena Romero to put Providence ahead for good.
Allman got the start for the Red Storm going six innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Lehman (3-6) came on in relief of Allman in the top of the seventh and took the loss for St. Johns, giving up two runs on three hits and one strikeout.
The St. Johns softball team returns to action on Saturday, May 3, when they host Boston College in a BIG EAST doubleheader. First pitch is slated for noon.
