Red Storm Soccer Players Enjoying Strong Summers

Five members of the Red Storm are playing for the Brooklyn Knights, while a pair have been appearing for the South Jersey Barons. Both teams compete in the Premier Development League.
The Knights are 3-2-2, while the Barons are 4-1-1. Both teams compete in the league?s Northeast Division, with South Jersey standing in second place, behind undefeated Cape Cod. The PDL is made up of 51 teams throughout the country. The teams are split into eight divisions.
Senior Chris Wingert (Babylon, N.Y.) has started all but one game for the Knights, missing one game while playing with the United States U-23 National Team. Wingert, a first-team All-American last year and a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, recognizing the National Player of the Year, has started at center-mid for Brooklyn. He scored on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute of a 2-0 win over Vermont on Saturday. Wingert has one goal and two assists this season.
Senior goalkeeper Bill Gaudette (Hummelstown, Pa.) has started every game for the Knights. He made five saves in a 2-0 shutout win over Vermont on Saturday.
Junior forward Andre Schmid (Sacramento, Calif.) is leading the Knights in scoring two goals and one assist for five points, while classmate Chris Corcoran (Marshfield, Mass.) has played two games, scoring one goal with two assists. Corcoran last year played with the Cape Cod Crusaders, who won the PDL National Championship. Junior Chris Leidner (Greenlawn, N.Y.) has also played three games for the Knights.
South Jersey has been led by Red Storm graduate student Guy Hertz (Ramat-Hasharon, Israel) Hertz has a 4-1-0 record in five games, logging 470 minutes with only one goal allowed. He has posted a league-leading four shutouts this season.
Sophomore midfielder Jeff Carroll (Springfield, Va.) is playing for the Chantilly (Va.) Magic, a club team that will be playing in regional championships next weekend.
St. John?s opens its 2003 season on Saturday, August 23 with a preseason match at Massachusetts. The regular season opens on Friday, August 29, when the Red Storm will face North Carolina at a tournament at Wake Forest.
