For the first time in St. John?s women?s basketball history, the Red Storm will play at Madison Square Garden, the world?s most famous arena in a BIG EAST regular season match-up against Seton Hall University.
In addition to the perennially challenging BIG EAST regular season schedule, 2003-04 will feature 11 non-conference match-ups, including tournaments at Rhode Island and Ohio State, where the Red Storm will take on the nationally ranked Buckeye?s in the first round on December 20.
A total of nine 2003-04 Red Storm opponents competed in the 2003 NCAA Championship Tournament. In addition to the seven BIG EAST rivals, both Holy Cross and Ohio State competed in the postseason.
St. John?s opens the season on the road with a game at last season?s Patriot League Champion, Holy Cross and return to Queens for the home opener against America East member Binghamton on November 25. The Red Storm will join Rhode Island, Howard and William and Mary at the Rhode Island Thanksgiving Tournament beginning on November 28 before returning home to face MAAC rival Fairfield in the first game of the Metro Classic, hosted by St. John?s this season.
The University of Delaware will visit Alumni Hall on December 8, before St. John?s heads to Buffalo. On December 14, the Red Storm will host St. Peter?s, then head to Ohio State, where, after facing the host in the first round, will take on Dayton or Pennsylvania in game two.
The 2003-04 BIG EAST slate kicks off at home on January 3 when St. John?s hosts Miami. The Red Storm?s final non-conference battle is scheduled for January 8 against Cornell at Alumni Hall, before BIG EAST action resumes on January 10 at Syracuse and on the 13th at home against West Virginia. The Red Storm will play games at Rutgers and Georgetown and host Pittsburgh on January 24. A two-game road trip involving Seton Hall and reigning National Champion, Connecticut, is slated for January 28 and 31.
February will open with two Alumni Hall contests against 2003 BIG EAST Tournament Champion, Villanova, and Providence before St. John?s heads to Florida for their final BIG EAST match-up with Miami on February 10. The Red Storm will host Notre Dame on February 17 and match-up with Villanova for a second time on February 21 in Philadelphia.
St. John?s final Alumni Hall game of 2003-04 will be against Boston College on February 25. On Sunday, February 29, St. John?s will travel to New York City to play Seton Hall in game two of a St. John?s men?s/women?s double-header at Madison Square Garden, and close out the regular season on the road at Virginia Tech on March 2.
The 2004 BIG EAST Championship is scheduled for March 6-9 at the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, Conn.
Kim Barnes Arico returns for her second season at the helm of the Red Storm. Last season St. John?s more than doubled their win column from the season before, finishing 8-19 overall and 2-14 in BIG EAST action.
